I may not get very many answers, posting this to a free blogging service, but I'm looking to transfer my family's personal website from my own webserver (located in my house and therefore limited to my ISP's crotchety bandwidth restrictions) to a hosted server somewhere. Does anyone have any good suggestions/experience with anyone?
Things I am specifically looking for:
- shell (SSH) access
- FTP/SFTP access
- ability to host multiple domains/subdomains on the same account
- PHP/MySQL/CGI availability
- .htaccess modification capabilities
- Reasonable disk storage
- Reasonable bandwidth
- Backup capabilities (either on-server or exportable)
- Reasonable monthly fees (not exorbitant)
The one I've come across that seems to handle all of these (and more) is BlueHost.com, but again I have no experience with them so I don't know how they measure up. They might be overkill, but then again, I haven't seen a lot for cheaper without going with someone with a reduced feature set (e.g. godaddy).
Depending on what I end up getting, I may end up using this as a remote backup mechanism for my personal PC, too, using something like rsync.
Any ideas?

You might want to check out asmallorange.com. I hear a lot of good things about them.

My husband uses BlueHost and really likes it. Their fees are reasonable (I think they let you purchase a year or two in bulk for extra savings), and he says it's very easy to use.

I love http://ace-host.net/ I've been with them for two years and they have EVERYTHING – crazy deals, frighteningly good tech support – they're really great as far as I'm concerned. Maybe you'd like to check them out. And I have absolutely no financial interest in them – just an honest-to-goodness happy customer.

I'm on Dreamhost and it's worked out alright. On the other hand I haven't been all that wowed. Their Ruby implementation keeps killing the one app I wrote, and the way they run PHP had some issue with some feed aggregator app I was playing with. The cool kids, I'm told are going with A2 and Laughing Squid but so far I'm willing to go with the (cheap) devil I know.

This is what I love about the internets. Ask, and you shall receive a host of great answers. Thanks so much everyone for the suggestions…now it's time for me to go figure out what I want to do exactly, and narrow it down from there…

I'll back up lemon's suggestion of A Small Orange. I've heard nothing but great things.Other alternatives if your not going to do either of the above:http://www.downtownhost.com/http://steadfast.net/http://www.mediatemple.net/ (Might be overkill)Those are some of the best in the biz. Also, use common sense, and even take it a bit further because with web hosting, if it looks to good to be true then IT IS NOT TRUE! If you take that approach, then you should be able to find a good host, but I'd stick to the suggestions I have posted, because I know they are legit.Hope you find something good for you.

I HIGHLY recommend dreamhost. I've been using them for years, and am continually impressed. Definitely worth a look.

a few people I know use DreamHost and they're very happy with the service as well. I've used 1and1 and Dotster in the past but I wouldn't go as far as to recommend them–it's hit or miss with those two.
