I’m back (at least, physically)

Well, 8 days of sun, surf, sand, and spirits are now behind me and I'm officially back in the office.  That doesn't mean I'm mentally all with-it, yet.  Quite the contrary.  I'm desperately wishing I didn't have 200 emails to read and respond to (that's not including the 300+ emails I have to read and DON'T have to respond to).  Oh well, vacation time in Mexico is now over and it's back to the grind.  I have to go from one extreme to another – next week, I'll be up in Duluth, Minnesota, where it's -20 degrees before the windchill.  I'll post some vacation photos once I pull them off my camera to rub it in just a bit more (or more likely, to help me forget about my frostbite).

Jedi in Training

Toy trains 'Star Wars' fans to use The Force

Destiny with fun: An aspiring Jedi concentrates on making the ball in the tube rise

The Force Trainer (expected to be priced at $90 to $100) comes with a headset that uses brain waves to allow players to manipulate a sphere within a clear 10-inch-tall training tower, analogous to Yoda and Luke Skywalker's abilities in the Star Wars films.

Mind-control games may be the coming thing: Mattel plans to demonstrate a Mind Flex game (also due this fall), which uses brain-wave activity to move a ball through a tabletop obstacle course, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Thursday.

In the Force Trainer, a wireless headset reads your brain activity, in a simplified version of EEG medical tests, and the circuitry translates it to physical action. If you focus well enough, the training sphere, which looks like a ping-pong ball, will rise in the tower.

Ok, I had to post this as a followup to yesterday's post on technologies promised to us in "the future" that haven't arrived yet. This seems like a decent start. Now let me know when I can control my car using my mind, and I'll buy in immediately.

The Future is Now?

I posted this on my tumblr this morning but figured I'd get a better response over here.   Plus it's been ages since I've posted here, and the white space of the compose window is throwing up a writer's block right now…
